B'nai B'rith and the Fariborz Fred Matloob Unit, Los Angeles: A New Chapter
B’nai B’rith has played an important role at the local level in Los Angeles through the inception of a new branch geared toward a community with a great presence in the area - the Iranian Jewish community. At the time that the Iranian chapter was developing, a tragic event occurred in the Iranian Jewish community, which contributed to the official creation of the new unit.
Fariborz Fred Matloob was born on December 1, 1963 in Tehran, Iran. He moved to Los Angeles and attended Beverly Hills High School, subsequently working in the business field. Fariborz's untimely passing occurred in 1983 after a tragic accident. Nonetheless, his memory lives on and he serves as an example to others for his hard work, motivation, and success. To this day, his memory and spirit live on through B’nai B’rith, whose Iranian Unit is named after him.
Unlike other organizations in the Iranian community, the Fariborz Fred Matloob Unit of B’nai B’rith focuses on a group of Iranian Jews and follows them from the beginning of the group’s establishment to the present day. The organization tried to establish a new connection to the youth of today but realized that if the true meaning behind the organization were to remain constant, it would have to remain working almost exclusively with the same group of affected people. While other organizations focus solely on social events, the Matloob Unit places tremendous emphasis on educating their community and showing them how to assimilate into American culture. For example, leaders of the unit assist Iranian Jews in signing up for health care and provide them with information that is relevant to their health and social needs.
