B'nai B'rith and the Fariborz Fred Matloob Unit, Los Angeles: Community

In the 1970s, B'nai B'rith recognized that decent housing and opportunities for companionship ranked among the foremost needs of the elderly Jewish population. As such, B'nai B'rith joined the federal government in a unique partnership to assist in building subsidized apartments for elderly people with low incomes. The buildings were open to all people regardless of their race, religion, ethnic, or national backgrounds. Non-profit local groups of B'nai B'rith and B'nai B'rith women helped ensure that the housing programs functioned properly and successfully.

B'nai B'rith has a deep commitment to serving the community and always helping those in need. B'nai B'rith International promotes volunteerism through their numerous projects and emphasizes the Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam — repairing the world in which we inhabit. As a result, B'nai B'rith recognizes the efforts of individuals who go to great lengths to serve their community and awards their helpful acts with the Presidential Gold Medal.
