MBQ - Changing Freedoms

Note: This is only a loose outline.  It can be done as DBQ type task or be expanded as a longer research project and to create digital media pieces. Please post any additions or ways of using it you come up with.

Historical Context
  • Access to different forms of legal and social freedom have changed for people living in the United States over time.  Since the writing of the Constitution, there have been debates about who should have the same rights as wealthy white men, for what reason, and to what extent.
Task
  • Describe 3 forms of freedom that have changed for people throughout American history.  For each of these moments, choose one identity group and a specific historical moment that corresponds to this group that symbolizes this shift.
  • Discuss the impact of people fighting for access to or the creation of freedoms. How have specific moments of people fighting for these freedoms impacted each of the shifts you choose above?
Project Outline
  • Warm-up: With a partner, brainstorm three forms of freedom. Use a cloud brainstorm to write down everything you know about these freedoms (who has them, what challenges them, what do they do for individuals/society, when granted/taken away, where do they come from, why important...)
  • Write down one group of people that actively relate to each of these freedoms. (This can be broad - humans and freedom from war, or can be specific - undocumented youth and freedom to be educated).
  • Use The Knotted Line Themes and other resources to research specific historical movements or moments that illustrate each groups’ relationship to the freedoms you have chosen. (i.e. freedom to be educated -> undocumented youth -> DREAMERS movement).
  • Respond to the Task above in writing (timed in-class essay or longer research project) or through the creation of digital media (audio narratives recorded on cell phones, photo illustrations of each group, short skits...).
