Actions for Self-Determination:
- 1991: Angela Davis, former Black Panther, political prisoner, and prison abolitionist, is appointed professor at UC Santa Cruz's History of Consciousness Program.
- 1996: Prison University Project provides college level liberal arts courses in prisons. Similar programs spring up across the country over the next 15 years.
- Late 1990s: A group of artists form the California Department of Corrections and begin altering corporate billboards.
- 2012: CURB (Californians United for a Responsible Budget) releases the Budget for Humanity. Their advocacy and organizing includes chopping 4.1 Billion in prison construction spending from the California State budget for 2012.
