1866: Alabama governor leases 374 state prisoners to Alabama Chattanooga Railroad. Three years later he becomes president of the railroad.

- 1968: Black and white prisoners shut down 75% of California's San Quentin State Prison in a strike for increased wages and an around-the-clock physician. Supported by solidarity work outside the gates, the group wins their demands. The action was preceded by a hunger strike in 1965.
- 2010: Sheriff Joe Arpaio, infamous for his aggressive policing of suspected immigrants, is served an eviction notice after ongoing pressure from the Puente Movement. Using taxpayer money, Arpaio had rented two floors in the Wells Fargo building instead of using county buildings for his office.
