Omer Fast's Spielberg's List
In 2003, media artist Omer Fast made Spielberg’s List, an hour-long video installation featuring interviews with Polish actors who had worked as extras in Schindler’s List, playing Jews. Interview segments are screened simultaneously on two adjacent screens, with different English-language subtitles offering slightly different renderings of what the Polish actors are saying. During the course of watching these interviews, the performers’ recollections of the experience of filming scenes set in the Cracow ghetto and the Płaszów labor camp seem to resemble survivors’ recollections of actual wartime experiences, destabilizing the viewer’s understanding of what is actually being remembered.
