Welcome

“Now! Visual Culture” was the first conference of the International Association for Visual Culture, held at New York University, May 31-June 2 2012. The opening session was called “15x5: Visual Culture Now.”

Using the format made so popular by TED talks and other speed lectures, fifteen practitioners and scholars of visual culture from around the world, representing different academic disciplines and practice traditions, presented their sense of what the field means to them in five minutes. The question posed to them was simply: “What is visual culture now?” Each presentation is shown here in full. Taken together, they are a new a manifesto for the future of the field.

These presentations are posted here as a new form of anthology of approaches to visual culture. We hope that you will use the videos as a resource for teaching and research. We expect this to be one of the most discussed outcomes of the conference and a key teaching tool.

With “publications” like this, critical visuality studies—as the conference renamed visual culture—succesfully takes up one of the oldest challenges to the field, namely to be visual. Using the multi-media software Scalar, developed by the Alliance for Networking Visual Culture, with a grant from the Andrew Mellon Foundation, projects like this indicate new futures not just for this field but for the humanities as a whole.
