The Music for the Stimulus Film
Each of the three subjects was asked, while in the fMRI, first to imagine the sound of rain in silence:
Then to listen to a recording of rain chosen by Einbond:
And finally to listen to Einbond's composition inspired by the sounds of rain, glaciers, and melting snow. Listen at 7:00 to hear the recording of rain as "covered" by the ensemble:
In a second set of instructions, the subjects were asked to imagine the sound of a covered passageway; to listen to Einbond's recording of a covered passageway; and finally to listen to Einbond's composition "Passagework." The piece emulates the way we listen to ambient sound in passageways; it was written for and performed by Yarn/Wire, a New York-based piano and percussion quartet whose members include Ian Antonio, Laura Berger, Ning Yu, and Russell Greenberg. Listen at 5:00 for the recording of a passageway accompanied by the ensemble:

The resultant scans chart their brain's responses and can be seen as a portrait of the subject, a new form of improvisation, and a way of looking at spectatorship.
