What Is Improvisation?
Improvisation is the art of responding in an immediate and unmediated way to the stimulus provided by one's environment. In music, dance, and theatre it is the art of generating something new and unplanned in the moment. The myth of improvisation is that material is created out of nothing and that it can be anything, but in most cases improvisation occurs within or based on a structured framework: a character type, a scenario, a section of text, a musical key, a melody line, or a selection of movements that can be used as choreographic building blocks.
