The Peninsula Library is a three-story structure built into the hills of Rolling Hills Estates in Palos Verdes, CA. Designed by A. Quincy Jones and Frederick Emmons, the 64,600 square foot structure was completed in 1967. Jones was an early mentor for Thom, counseling him to “Be selective. Work with people you enjoy being with. Photograph projects you respect.” Thom took these photographs shortly after graduating from Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA. He focused on how the structure was used by the community: more than just a place for checking out books, it suggests an inviting environment for younger children to experience reading and older students to study. In an exterior composition, a woman reclines under the vast, waffle slab pergola hovering over shifting horizontal planes and integrated greenery.
