Anthony Lumsden designed the Marina City Residential Buildings for the architecture firm Daniel Mann Johnson & Mendenhall (DMJM). The buildings occupy a scenic location on Marina Del Rey’s harbor, with views of the boat slips below and the Pacific Ocean beyond. Organized as a series of crescents around central gardens, the exteriors are tiered with balconies providing access for each resident to the spectacular views beyond.

Thom’s photographs emphasize the patterned surfaces created by recessed balconies and corridors to capture the project’s play between light and shadow. This is further emphasized by the angles through which he photographed this monumental concrete structure. One photograph frames the building from a worm’s eye view emphasizing the dramatic sweep of the curved façade.
