C2C's Inaugural LMS Preconference 2017

The LMS Preconference was an idea spurred from a special interest group luncheon (A Canvas Users Group brought together by Linda Wapelhorst, retired Online Director at Butler) which was held during the 2016 SIDLIT Conference. As a result of the conversation, it was clear there was a need for a cost effective regional LMS conference. The idea was pitched to the SIDLIT Steering Committee with Anna Catterson serving as chairperson. With my LMS background, Anna Catterson (SIDLIT Chair) asked if I would chair the committee. After months of planning, we are ecstatic to launch the first annual LMS Preconference on August 2, which will include 15 presentations and conclude with a panel discussion! Our goal is to create a cost-effective LMS conference where member institutions share their expertise in an LMS specific format.
While completing informal research on LMS distribution within Kansas Higher Education for the Preconference, it became apparent Kansas is consolidated into four LMS platforms. Accordingly, Canvas is used by 18 institutions, Moodle and BlackBoard by 14 institutions each, D2L by 4, leaving 5 institutions using less prevalent LMS solutions (Jenzebar, etc).

It is a privilege to serve as the chair of the First Annual LMS SIDLIT Preconference. As the Assistant Director of Educational Technology at Butler Community College, I support and train faculty with LMS integration, research emerging learning technologies and am currently working on finalizing an institutional wide digital badging initiative set to launch this Fall. As a member of the Butler Community College faculty and as Chair of the SIDLIT Preconference, I want to extend an invitation to the LMS Preconference! Registration for the conference is only $10 for a half day schedule featuring four LMS tracks.

The LMS Preconference will be held at the Office and Classroom Building (OCB) in the Co-Lab.

Brian A. Dye is Assistant Director of Educational Technology and an adjunct instructor at Butler Community College. He moved to Kansas a little over two years ago and began as an Instructional Technologist at Butler, assisting faculty with their educational technology instructional needs through workshops and one-on-one training. He teaches Criminal Behavior for Butler Online, which keeps him busy. Prior to this position, he spent nearly 13 years in various roles at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri. While working at Drury, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology/ Psychology in 2006. He nearly finished a Masters in Business Administration degree before realizing that was not the direction he wanted to pursue and in 2014, he received a Masters in Education with an emphasis in Instructional Technology.

LMS Preconference Registration
Registration is available from http://blogs.jccc.edu/c2c/sidlit/registration/. The cost for the LMS Preconference is $10 (for Aug. 2), which cost covers all sessions and snacks. (Registration for SIDLIT 2017 alone is $56 for both Aug. 3 and 4. Registration for both events is $66.)
