Removing The Transmission
Safety should be your biggest concern while you plan on removing the transmission from the car. To assist in getting the transmission up and out of the car safely, the car should be raised from the ground with the help of the floor jacks. The jacks must be placed under the frame in a place where it leaves enough space for the transmission jack to be rolled under the car without hitting the jacks. If you do not have a good set available, you can opt for heavy-duty ramps, still set of floor jacks is highly recommended.
Before removing the transmission bolds, you must unbolt the torque converter from the flywheel. Remove the inspection cover. Removing this piece allows you to have easier access to the bolts that hold down the transmission. A screwdriver can be used to free the bolts. You also would require removing the driveshaft. Make sure to drain the transmission fluid properly prior to removing the drive shaft unless you have a yoke available that may slip into the transmission to avoid leakage.
Remove all the links attached to the transmission and also the speedometer wiring. Also, disconnect the wiring harness or TCC wiring. The transmission cooling wires should also be removed. In case you are unable to remove these wires, it is good to cut them as your last option.
Once the transmission has been removed, you can move the transmission lift into place and secure the one to the lift. Remove all the rear mounting bolts and enhance the transmission to facilitate the removal of the rear frame mount.
Getting the transmission lifted is certainly not the last step. Ensure it is properly lowered to the ground. The transmission must not tilt forward while being lowered to the ground and the tubes remain seated in the unit properly. Once placed on the ground, use a torque converter to remove extra weight and make your new transmission a lot easier to handle.
