The Roman Brothers: Early LA Markets

Although Jack Roman convinced his brothers to come to Los Angeles, he was not part of the Roman Brothers partnership. Jack owned a very successful deli in the Belvedere Gardens Market. He remained with this deli while operating other delis throughout the city including one in Hattem's Market on Western Avenue and 43rd Street.

The Roman Brothers Partnership consisted of Irving, Pat, Lou and Nate Roman, as well as their brothers-in-law, Sol Gernstein and Bill Tuckman. One of the first markets was the Los Feliz Mart on North Vermont Avenue, south of Franklin in the Los Feliz neighborhood. The brothers continued to run this market while they opened others around the Los Angeles area including the Huntington Park Mart on Pacific Blvd near Randolph, City Food Mart in Hollywood and The Hub Mart in Silverlake.

Barry Gernstein, son of grocer Sol Gernstein and Tess Roman, remembers the drive from his home in South Central Los Angeles to the Los Feliz Mart.

Cookie Sender, daughter of grocer Sol Gernstein and Tess Roman, recalls working as a teenager in the Los Feliz Mart.
