The Roman Brothers: The Hub

Bill Tuckman married Sonia Roman in the 1920s and received his chiropractic license in the state of New York. Jack Roman convinced him to come to California in the 1930s and got him involved with Roman Brothers markets. He joined the brothers to operate The Hub Mart in Silverlake and City Food Mart in Hollywood.

The Hub Mart, built in the 1920s, was across the street from the original Disney Studios on Hyperion Ave in Silverlake. No images seem to exist of the front of the market, but the sign faced directly toward the studios.  The market apparently had a strong reputation as a friendly family-run grocery.

After the brothers disbanded the partnership in the mid-1950's, Bill opened his own market, Penny Food Mart at the corner of Centinela and La Brea in Inglewood.

Stephanie Stephens, daughter of Bill Tuckman and Sonia Roman, recalls her father, the chiropractor and grocer.
