Here we will focus on editing concepts and techniques.
The concepts we are going to consider are:- Tone, meaning the attitude, mood, or feel of the video.
- Pace, meaning the speed at which it moves.
- Rhythm, the timing between the cuts.
- Style, meaning how it all comes together, the techniques used, the visual aesthetic, the use of music, the influence of the pace and rhythm, and so forth.
- Type of cut being made, a standard cut, e.g., a jump cut, which moves the narrative forward or back in time
- Transitions such as cross dissolves and fades,
- Montagues. [link to list]
Example One:
Now let’s use that video to discuss some concepts and techniques.
Key Concept Takeways:- Style - The overall way the video is executed (e.g., the visual aesthetics, the music, the pace and rhythm).
- Tone - The attitude, mood, or feel the video evokes.
- Pace - The speed with which the video moves.
- Rhythm - The timing of the cuts or, put another way, the timing between cuts.

Editing is the assembling of media (video, images, and audio) into a structure that tells a story, presents instructional information, and the like. It is both a technical and creative process that is similar to writing, for it requires similar organizational skills as well as creative thinking. Let’s look at an editing project to get a sense of what editing looks like in iMovie.

This workshop will introduce you to basic video editing techniques and will provide an overview and instructions on how to use iMovie, a Mac application. (When possible, the steps being taken in iMovie will be translated for Windows Video Maker.) The workshop will be divided into three basic sections:
- editing concepts and techniques,
- technology skills,
- and a practicum.
- learning outcomes
Now let's look at the video as it appears in iMovie and some and consider some of the thinking behind its design:
