Electricity is the biggest factor for why all
these people benefit from this greatly technological sculpted city and this
same electricity plays a huge role in how Las Vegas eliminates time and space.
Just as the railroad eliminated time and space back when it was first developed
due to its faster speed, electricity now is also doing the same since it is way
faster than railroad. The railroad was able to get from one place to another in
a fraction of the time but now electricity can get from one place to another in
a fraction of the time that the railroad can. Both instances created a sense of
space being shrunken. Also just as the railroad theoretically shrunk space by
two thirds since people were now technically able to get anywhere in a third of
the time, electricity has basically shrunken the world dramatically.
Electricity can be sent from one side of the United States to other in a few
seconds. Of course realistically space was never shrunken since every casino was
still the same distance from its power source. In Schivelbusch’s article "Railroad
Space and Railroad Time," there is a
very interesting idea that states that “space was both diminished and expanded”
(35). As mentioned before, electricity shrunk space because everything was now
closer to each other in terms of time. This also occurred when the railroad was
first introduced but it also expanded it because as Schivelbusch points out “by
establishing transport lines to ever more outlying areas, metropolis tended to
incorporate the entire nation” (35). Since Las Vegas is reliant on the national
power grid, it has technically has workers from all over the United Sates and
parts of Canada. The city of Las Vegas is constantly expanding on its own. Back
in time when it was a small oasis to currently now it has expanded more than
any one would’ve ever imagined, especially for a city in the middle of the
desert. Even though it is now a monster of a city it is still expanding. New
architectures are being built yearly and the city adds thirty kilometer of
under ground power lines, which at this rate could reach California by the year
2019.
