Biography:
Born in Malaysia, Cheng Yet-Por experienced his first formal art lessons at the National Academy of Art in Hangzhou. He began his career first mastering traditional Western styles in oil paints. He continued his artistic studies, and soon after mastered the traditional Chinese ink techniques of permeable paper painting and finger painting. He achieved depth and dimension in his ink paintings through the layering of ink as well as innovative application that added texture to the designs in his finger paintings. He became known for his ability to convey energy, weight, and emotion through heavy lines and simple shapes. His work mainly depicts animals, focusing on the shape of the bodies and the expression of movement. He split much of his time traveling between the US and Taiwan, and eventually settled near San Francisco. He later founded the “Chinese Art Institute” with his neighbor and fellow artist, Chang Dai-chien.
