Voluntary Societies

I've added this poster not only because Gandhi was a vegetarian in England, a distinct subculture, but also because voluntary groups and organizations represented a rising social, political and cultural force in the late 19th century and early 20th century. From the Boy Scouts to the American Legion, from the Czech Sokol to the German Wandervogel, from temperance to the re-emergence of the KKK, new voluntary associations shaped societies around the world, especially in the West. To this picture, we should add powerful professional organizations like the American Bar Association (1878) and the American Medical Association (1847).
