Introduction
This book will introduce intelligence officers and social science researchers to online techniques for collecting OSINT (open source intelligence). Historically, OSINT was a macrosociological method of data collection. Researchers would collect data at the country level of analysis, using news media and official government documents. This was useful for military and business intelligence analysts who needed to predict trends in that country's economy or politics.
With the advent of the Internet, OSINT can now be collected at the micro and mesosociological levels of analysis. Micro-level OSINT usually involves researching individuals, or very small groups. Meso-level OSINT involves researching larger groups or social networks.
