About the Cover Art

Front Cover

Kristin Reynolds, Frosty Sunrise

I look for inspiration in the everyday, and try to capture a moment of what is happening around me to share with others. Late on a 9° winter morning in Anchorage, a striking sunrise brought the relief of light out of the darkness. Seeing frost on the outdoor light string, I set up a ladder as quickly as I could, skipping the step of putting on winter gear so I would be sure to capture the color display before it dissipated. The contrast of emotion in the natural light of a sunrise and the light of a fabricated light bulb is captured in the image. Frost is the focus, a subtle display by nature showing its dominance over the man-made lamp, our human attempt to be in control of our environment.

Aaron Porter, Crystal Sphere

Creating and capturing my photo was originally for a photography assignment. However, I took a different approach and perspective on the whole ordeal: I wanted to capture something more than a school assignment. I wanted to capture something that had meaning, something I could look back on. Something I could be proud of. I thought, what can I do to capture people’s attention? Recently, I was gifted a crystal sphere, and I said, that is it! It was raining the day I took the photo, which created the perfect conditions for light reflection—so I thought downtown would be excellent! I snapped the first shot...then told myself, this is the one I will keep and remember forever!
