Digital Filmmaking

Digital video and editing have become the main source of media production today. This section will trace the evolution of digital filmmaking and digital audio production and its rise in the Media Studies program.
Here is an example of of a student soundscape film that is shot with a digital Canon 5D Mark camera, made in 2011

The first couple sentences of the 2000 Digital Editing Course: "Thecurrent explosion in digital media technologies is allowing industry ;professionals to work with speed and flexibility unprecedented in;conventional tape-based environments. While this course will consider;the importance and impact of digital camcorder and digital audio tape
(DAT), discussion will concentrate on computer-driven editing;systems, the sophistication and capacity of which have changed the;entire production process from project inception and planning through;to final broadcast."

The rhetoric alone surrounding these new digital technologies in the 2000 catalog shows a total shift in media technology, while also showing hints of the rise of digital industry.

Below is the the 2007 course catalog for Digital Video and Digital Audio courses.  At this point, video and digital audio tape (DAT) are still the main form of video recording, though the editing for these tapes is done digitally.

By 2014, most production courses are shot and done in HD digital. With the evolution of the digital camera and digital editing tools comes inevitable changes in curriculum. I spoke with Melissa Friedling, the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Media Studies and Film at The New School, and asked, “was there a significant shift in the classroom when digital media became the dominant form of production as opposed to film, tape, etc.?”

Technology will continue to change, and therefore the Media Studies program will continue to change and adapt to it. Past course catalogs and the wisdom of faculty are some of the best resources to tell the story of an ever-shifting media landscape.
