Submission Guidelines
The Space Between: Literature and Culture 1914-1945 is the peer-reviewed journal for The Space Between Society. Like the society, the journal is devoted to interdisciplinary scholarship on the period bracketed by the two World Wars. We are interested in approaches to texts of all kinds, emphasizing research on lesser-known writers and artists and understudied topics of the period, including literary and cultural responses to the First and Second World Wars.
In addition to publishing annual issues of the society's peer-reviewed journal on general and special topics, this platform serves as a digital scholarly community for those interested in research on the field of intermodernism. New issues on general and special topics are published in the winter of the volume year. View archived issues here.
Submission Guidelines
All submissions should be sent via email to Jennifer Nesbitt, Editor (jpn12@psu.edu).
The Space Between: Literature and Culture 1914–1945 appears annually, in the winter of the volume year. The annual issue typically consists of 4–6 articles of approximately 6,000–9,000 words. Special topics issues may be longer, and may also include a general topics feature or cluster. All submissions to the journal undergo anonymous peer review, wherein identities of both author and reviewers are shielded. Potential contributors receive reports from expert readers (drawn from the Editorial Board, Advisory Committee, and/or the field) within 8–10 weeks. Reviewers typically recommend accept, accept pending revisions, revise and resubmit, or reject; the final decision along with detailed feedback is communicated by the Editor in an action letter. Should an author receive a decision of revise and resubmit, revisions are encouraged within 4 months, and should be accompanied by a summary of revisions made.
Occasionally we work with guest editor(s) to publish special issues, or a special-topic cluster within a general issue. Information about current calls for special topics may be found on the journal site as well as on the site for The Space Between Society. Those interested in submitting a proposal for a future special issue should contact the journal Editor. Proposals for special topics issues or clusters are reviewed by the Advisory Board for The Space Between Society, with the Editor making the final determination. Once a proposal has been vetted and approved, guidelines and support, including the dissemination of the CFP and the development of a timeline to publication, are provided by the journal Editor to guest editor(s). The journal Editor reserves the right to decline to publish pieces selected by the guest editor(s) once the final contents are submitted for publication if those pieces do not meet the standards of the journal. Guest editor(s) will be asked to sign an agreement stipulating their understanding of the expectations and responsibilities of the role.

Authors should please note:
- Submissions should follow the most recent guidelines for MLA style. (Note: Beginning with the 2017 issue, authors should follow the 8th edition.)
- Submissions should include an abstract and five keywords. Upon acceptance, authors will be asked to submit a contributor's bio as well. Submissions must be prepared for anonymous peer review; authors are requested to scrub files of identifying information.
- Do not use the automatic "insert note" function in Microsoft Word, and avoid any other non-basic formatting.
- The Space Between welcomes submissions that take advantage of the digital platform for multimedia scholarship. Most typical file formats for sound, video, and image are supported. Authors are requested to send all multimedia components as separate files; please do not embed them in Word documents or PDFs. Files must be smaller than 2MB. All media must be accompanied by a list of captions which must include credit lines, and the text of the essay must indicate clearly in call-outs where figures are to be inserted (e.g., <FIG 1>).
- Authors maintain the rights to their work. Prior to publication, authors are asked to sign a consent to publish agreement. We ask that upon publication authors agree to Creative Commons licensing; this license is specifically meant for the sharing of free cultural works, such as scholarly publications disseminating original research.
- Authors are responsible for obtaining all permissions regarding images, video, music, etc. The Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations offers helpful resources for this and other aspects of working in the digital context. When making requests for permission, specify English-language world rights for web-based publication; note that images will be available indefinitely, and that the work appears under Creative Commons licensing. Please submit all correspondence related to permissions prior to publication. The Editor cannot take on the responsibility of obtaining permissions for images, nor can The Space Between or Space Between Society provide funding to pay for the costs associated with permissions.
- Potential authors are encouraged to send queries regarding possible projects in advance of submission. The Editor is happy to collaborate with any potential contributor to determine the best strategies for communicating their work. The Editor does, however, reserve the right to decline reviewing or publishing work that does not suit the mission of the journal, is not of the quality expected by its readers, etc.
Feedback on the journal and the site is always welcome. Please contact the Editor if you have any suggestions for improving the user experience, or if you have ideas to further facilitate readers' engagement with scholarship on the site.
