The Encyclopédie defines music as "the science of sounds, in as much as they are capable of pleasantly affecting the ear, or the art of arranging and leading sounds in such a way that their consonance, their succession, and their relative duration result in agreeable sensations" (898).  Agreeableness served as the main criteria for sound as music in eighteenth-century Paris.  Disagreeable sound was mere noise: see, for example, the public voice.
