"Ici de la simple nature," from Rousseau's Le Devin du Village

Since its premiere at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal in 1753, Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Le Devin du Village (1752) pushed pastoral, light opera into the mainstream music culture of Paris, France.  This tune, "Ici de la simple nature," from the one-act opera, persisted in popularity into the nineteenth century particularly because of its sing-ability.

Violin: Sarah K. Griffin
Production: Jamie Keesecker
