Guy Debord, "The Culmination of Separation"

Delusion and False Consciousness:

"The Spectacle presents itself simultaneously as society itself, as a part of society, and as a means of unification. As a part of society, it is the focal point of all vision and all consciousness. But due to the very fact that this sector is separate, it is in reality the domain of delusion and false consciousness: the unification it achieves is nothing but an official language of universal separation."

At this moment, Jane is faced with the question concerning reality and the real. Her question reflects her lack of consciousness or rather her adherence to a "false consciousness." This delusion of reality, which she accepts, reveals the way in which the spectacle, or the virtual reality in this case, has inserted itself within the consciousness of society. Acceptance of the virtual space requires a detachment from reality and separation from the body. The lack of awareness surrounding this false reality illustrates the divorce of mind from body, meaning from information.
