Hunger Test Case
by David Hobbs
This poem is an example of a recent project that involves using (or misusing) dictation software. Some of these programs are unable to distinguish between human voices and other sounds and try to render everything they hear in English words. The result tends to be a chain of pronouns, conjunction and articles ("Lil B Capture" is one example). Then, I take the capture and try to intervene upon it to create a prose poem. The bisected line draws attention to the two sources of material and creates a parallel with the traditional orthography of Old English riddles. I've been calling these poems "witographs." -graph from the Greek, wit- from the Old English dual first-person pronoun, and -o- because it is convenient; so, literally "we two writing."
