When beginning this project, I first began with studies based off of bullying prevention, thinking that the support I would need to prove my argument would be there. Then as I further looking into my findings and study, I realized I needed to connect the bully prevention ideas to the studies that supported the idea that mother’s used Facebook more than dads. To support my general topic that mom’s are more involved in the StopBullying.Gov platform (specifically on Facebook) I needed both contexts.

I began my literature review with a few articles about bullying and parents involvement in it. These articles were general and went over what it was to bully or be bullied and how to prevent it. Then I went further into these articles trying to find parents affects on bullying within their children. From there I then continued to find parents influence in their child’s lives and the differences between mothers and fathers in that aspect. Then finally I ended with the idea of the differences between mothers and fathers on Facebook. From these statistics I then went further into my study within the actual Facebook Page of StopBullying.Gov.

The literature contents I used provided support to my ideas and gave me the justification I needed to continue with my report. I know knew that I could connect different studies to help guide me with my studies. Although I looked over two dozen articles I found the most helpful ones towards the end of the project.

As I stated earlier I began my studies with the general idea of bullying which lead me to a book titled “The
Issue of Bullying and School Safety”. This book gave me the general idea of where the StopBullying Platform is getting their ideas and posts. This book also goes into the families affect on bullying, which then continues my study into the next part about parent’s affects on bullying.

This new idea then lead me to two articles- one by the Washington State Office of the Education Ombuds and the second by Tower-Soudan Kindergarten Classroom News. Both these articles supported the ideas of bullying prevention and parental interference. Like I had mentioned earlier a lot of my ideas had begun because of the times I was in an educational classroom, observing teachers and students. In these days, I would sometimes see a child misbehave or get a little mean with other students which could be considered bullying if it went any further and each time the parent would ask the student if they would like their mother called. It was never directed at the father. These articles didn’t support the idea that mothers were just more involved in the topic of bullying, but then I realized it may not be that they were more involved on this topic on Facebook but instead that mothers were just more involved in Facebook altogether.

From that idea, my new question formed. I know didn’t think that it was the idea that mothers were more involved in the topic of bullying and that’s why they were more involved in the platform on Facebook. But now I realized that it might just be that mothers were more involved in Facebook more than fathers. This led me to a research done by Edison Research, which provided me with the statistics to support my new idea. These statistics, which are later discussed, support the idea that mom’s are just more dominant in the Facebook world, which then allows them to share ideas, comment, like and post on topics that mainly concern them-which are their children. StopBullying then connects perfectly into those categories.

After reading that study, I knew what I wanted to find on the platform and the Facebook page. I wanted to find the difference between mothers and fathers, moms and dads and to see the majority of the comments and posts being done by moms. From this idea, I then found two more articles about Facebook and parents. One article was general about how to spy on your child online. This article from Parenting.com gave me more support for reasons that parents would be on Facebook. These general ideas just helped me to realize purposes for parents (together) to be on Facebook which I was able to take and apply to the idea of how both parents are on Facebook but then also see why one is one more than the other.

Then after reading all of those articles I finally landed on my last article that was helpful which was about how Parents keep tabs on school happenings via social media. Although StopBullying.Gov is not only about school happenings, it still has ideas about that, because going back to my original articles I found that the majority of bullying occurrences take place in school. All the articles and books now connect and support my main question of why moms are more dominant on the StopBullying.Gov Facebook page.
