"How Great Thou Art"

Probably the most beloved hymn of this century is Stuart K. Hine’s “How Great Thou Art” (1953).  Though a Britishman, Hine was visiting Russia as a missionary when he heard this Swedish poem set to a Swedish folktune and was inspired to translate and augment the words, especially as he viewed the Carpathian Mountains there. The song moved around the world and ended up being picked up by Billy Graham’s 1954 crusade, truly a timeless and universal favorite. It is often used at funerals. But children love to sing it, too.
