Sounding Childhood

"Greensleeves"

"Greensleeves" is a well-known tune in English because it was used for the Christmas carol, "What Child is This." But it is a much older folksong, about a "Lady Greensleeves" who leaves her lover.  It has been thought to have been written by King Henry 8th, but this is not likely as "A Newe Northen Dittye of ye Ladye Greene Sleves" was first registered (by a Richard Jones) in 1580, after Henry's death.  The tune is haunting.

Our Winter/Valentine's Choir 2026 sang this at several senior-living communities in February 2026.
