"God of the Ages" (National Hymn)
"God of the Ages," originally "God of our Fathers," words by Daniel C. Roberts (1876) and music by George W. Warren (1894), was written by Roberts, an Episcopalian priest FOR the centennial in 1876. Warren, editor for the Episcopalian hymnal, wrote this regal tune for it. It was quickly accepted as our "National Anthem." It, too, reflects on the history of our country, from "war's alarms" to "deadly pestilence" (v. 3), but looks to "Thy divine love [which] hath led us in the past" (v. 2), to "be thy strong arm, our ever sure defense (v. 3), that "in this free land with thee our lot is cast" (v. 2). Opening with trumpet voluntary or on a regal organ at church, it can be a powerful hymn to sing!
