Grading
Those who wish to try for an A or A- must complete an Individual Project by Monday, December 19. If you wish to collaborate with another student on your project you must clearly carve out your own individual part and contribution to the project.
Students who successfully complete all the tweeting, annotations, and team assignments will earn a grade of B or B+ (with B+ indicative of the extra value you have added to our discourse in the course).
Minimum requirements to earn a B or B+
Active participation in class and online:
Most assignments are via Twitter, hypothes.is annotation and/or specified in Scalar. You will be assigned various readings and web site to annotate with hypothes.is. Email me in advance if you are unable to prepare an assignment. You can expect to spend a minimum of about 6 hours of reading/watching videos/listening to podcasts per week. As the class progresses you will be required to locate and add your own recommendations for readings for the class, and to give the reason for your recommendation. Remember it does not have to be a source you agree with. For some class meetings we will use Twitter to have a back channel for discussion. This will be considered class participation as will your Tweets during candidate debates. The hashtag for the class is #socpolnyu. Always use this tag for Tweets related to the class and those you want classmates to see.
Research: As part of your class and online participation you are to seek out, save, and cite materials related to the issues in the class. These should be credible sources and at least 15 of them should be identified as high quality in terms of the reliability and trustworthiness of the information provided. Review submit a listing of all the citations (other than Wikipedia) that you have accumulated for the course. The list is due no later than November 30th. This assignment is not graded but failure to submit a list that includes at least citations that are original to you (not ones I provided), and high quality as described above will reduce your rating for class participation.
If you are concerned about your ability to meet the work expectations of this class (due to outside obligations of work and/or family) or about how your final grade might affect your financial aid please make an appointment to see me at the beginning of the course or as soon as possible.
