A Close Reading of Pulp Ficion: Ezekiel 25:17

Close Reading

In Pulp Fiction, during the scene where Jules and Vincent enter Brett's apartment, Quentin Tarantino builds the tension in the scene culminating with the famous reading of Ezekiel 25:17. 


“...Ezekiel 25:17: The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee."

After a close analysis however, we can see the parallels between the scene and the content of the passage portrayed through the use of camera angles, dialogue and character development. Tarantino sets up Jules to be in the position of the righteous man who is shepherding the weak, Brett and his roommates, from evil by killing them and delivering them to heaven. 


The scene starts with shots of the apartment door opening to reveal contrasting roles of the different characters. The three roommates inside the apartment all have innocent looks on their faces and are enjoying food and relaxing, one is laid on the couch, another, Brett, is having breakfast. Jules and Vincent have stone-cold expressions on their faces, however, and enter the apartment without invitation. We can also see this from the age differences, as Jules and Vincent are older than the roommates, who appear to be in their early twenties, thus putting the hit-men in an authoritative position. Jules stresses this point even further when he says, “Hey kids. How you boys doing?” A closeup shot of the door shutting from the outside shows that the weak children are now trapped with the powerful hit-men.


The tension that is built up is quelled by Jules' small talk with the boys. He makes it clear that they are there on behalf of Marcellus Wallace, but he keeps it light by asking them about breakfast. This also serves to show their authority in that he can tell them to be calm and they will listen attentively. As this dialogue is going on, Vincent moves to the kitchen behind Brett thus surrounding him and preparing for the attack that the boys don't expect. Now, Brett is placed in the middle of the room and is forced to remain sitting below those that are towering above him. When Brett is shown onscreen, from the front, it is with Jules' sleeve framing the left of the screen and Vincent in the background. The shots of Jules facing Brett are placed behind Brett and are tilted slightly upward to show that Jules is so much grander than him. These shots symbolize Brett being stranded in the valley of darkness.


Going further, the lines of dialogue between Jules and Brett reveal that Brett got into the situation he is in through a series of mistakes in a business with evil men, probably due to inexperience. His inexperience is shown when he tries to explain things after Jules has an outburst where he shuts up one of the boys who interjected. Brett tries to explain that they “got into the [business] with the best intentions”. This naivety sets Brett up to be one of the lost children. One of the weak that needs leading through the valley of darkness. 


Jules cuts him off by shooting the boy that was laid on the couch and making it known that they mean business. One could interpret this as Jules being part of the tyranny of evil men. However, in his previous dialogue and his retort to Brett, he lays down his authority in a justified way. The dialogue even humanizes Jules and mentioning his girlfriend allows us to see him as a sort of father figure. This justifies his actions. He is not doing these things out of evil. Instead, he is trying to teach these boys a lesson, setting himself up to be the righteous man who shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness. 


Vincent, in contrast to Jules, does not have any dialogue to justify his claims, nor does he have any expression to show any sort of compassion. From the moment they enter the room he walks to the kitchen and occupies himself with rolling and smoking a joint, remaining in the background of most shots. The only shot that shows Vincent's expression is when he opens the case that he and Jules were there to collect, revealing the lust in his eye. Vincent's obvious desire for whatever is in that case, represent the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. This is mainly because his lack of dialogue give us no justification for his actions and thus paint him to be a cold blooded killer doing things for pure selfish malice. 


With Jules as the righteous man and Vincent as the tyranny of evil men, one must wonder why Jules and Vince are partners. This is answered in a different scene in the movie where Jules realizes that he is the tyranny of evil men, along with Vince.


After, scaring Brett into silence, Jules makes the point that Brett and his friends tried to “fuck Marcellus Wallace” and the lesson they need to be learning is not to mess with the kind of evil that will corrupt their innocent childhood that would transform them into someone like Vincent. Instead of allowing the boys to live out their transformation as the years go by, he shepherds them through the valley of darkness and delivers these lost children to heaven by shooting them. Thus, it shows it is better to die innocent rather than live to turn into evil.
