Exploring Republican China in the USC Digital Library: An Experimental Metadata Analysis

About the Authors

Tang Li is the Chinese Studies Librarian with the USC East Asian Library, where she oversees Chinese collection development and management, provides specialized reference and research support services, and organizes academic programs and events to promote the Chinese collection at the USC Libraries. She has published peer-reviewed journal articles on Chinese local gazetteers and archives, digital scholarship, and social media. She holds an MA in art history and an MLS in library science from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a BA in museum studies from Fudan University, China. Before joining the USC Libraries in 2017, Ms. Li served as the Public Services Librarian and Interim Librarian for the Chinese Collection with the East Asia Library at Yale University.

Zhijin Shen was a former research assistant at the USC East Asian Library, where he assisted in reviewing the Chinese rare book collection and visualizing Republican China collections in the USC Digital Library. He is currently employed as a designer at one of the top architecture firms in Los Angeles. Mr. Shen holds an M.Arch from the USC School of Architecture and a BS in Civil Engineering from Southeast University, China. During his graduate studies at USC, he received a Merit Scholarship and won the Excellent Design Award and Term Paper Award in the healthcare studio.
