Refugee Narratives: Ten Stories of Cambodian Refugees

The Sisters' Work in Cambodia

The Congregation contributed to the relief efforts in Cambodia beginning in 1979 under the guidance of Mother Superior Sister Olivia Maria. They had previously shown their support for Cambodian refugees through financial means.  After witnessing the turmoil Cambodia was facing in the late 1970s, however, Mother Superior came to understand that on-site assistance was needed for the hundreds of thousands of people who were forced to flee Cambodia in search of safety. Many sisters enthusiastically volunteered to assist  the refugees, but ultimately Sisters Helen Marie Auth, Kathryn T. Callahan, Madeleine M. Clayton, Miriam Paul Clennon, Paula A. Goettelmann, and Maureen Grady were chosen to aid the refugees based on their nursing and healthcare qualifications. Travelling to Thailand in 1979, they worked with the CRS in the Sa Kaeo and Khao-I-Dang refugee camps during their three month assignment.
