The slides in this case document various species of lizards, snakes, frogs, and toads, as well as desert habitats. However, the slides themselves do not actually correspond to the titles on the inventory. As the majority of these slides are dated 1948, they are representative of Norris's work in desert ecology during his studies at UCLA.gallery2016-06-07T11:43:29-07:00Alex Moore6cd84a9f7efd71803c15562e48a509db9e0bb5a6

Here you can compare the methods and material practices of observation archived in these two collections, as well as how scientists in each field interfaced with and related to nature.gallery2016-06-07T11:23:02-07:00Danielle Crawford22ce6a14f83c9ff73c3545a665951a092258f08e

Norris: Natural History Field Quarter1The objects on this shelf pertain to the Natural History Field Quarter, a popular course that Norris created during his time as professor of natural history in UCSC's Environmental Studies Department. The images, notes, and syllabus are from various Field Quarters taught by Norris, including the course's first offering in 1973.gallery2016-06-07T00:29:58-07:00Danielle Crawford22ce6a14f83c9ff73c3545a665951a092258f08e

Norris: Echolocation1The objects on this shelf highlight Norris's research on dolphin echolocation and the various technologies he used for this research, such as audiotape recordings and sonographs. There are also images of Kathy the dolphin pressing a lever while blindfolded, an experiment that Norris and colleagues conducted in order to prove the existence of dolphin echolocation.gallery2016-06-07T00:57:12-07:00Danielle Crawford22ce6a14f83c9ff73c3545a665951a092258f08e

Notably, the archives contain sketches and correspondence from famous astronomical illustrator Étienne Trouvelot. Did the ideas and images offered by artists like Trouvelot have an impact on the way astronomers at the Lick perceived the cosmos? Can astronomical illustrations count as factual data? When observing the cosmos, can objectivity be disentangled from aesthetic experience? Is it possible to obtain "objective" representations of celestial objects like galaxies and nebula when their details are invisible even in the telescope? How were Lick astronomers' ideas about the objectivity of the camera filtered through the aesthetic concern to produce visually stunning photographs? How is our idea of the reality of the cosmos--then, as now--a matter of aesthetic expectations created by certain standards and conventions of representation?
