Sources and Methodology

The sources that I incorporate into my project are meant to offer a historical framework, analyze the images of the eagle and Virgin of Guadalupe, explore past and present Chicana/o murals and relate them to the Chicana/o movement as a whole. They vary from academic journals like the “Virgin of Guadalupe: Symbol of Conquest or Liberation” by Jeannette Peterson, to other secondary sources like Walls of Empowerment: Chicana/o Indigenous Murals of California” by Guisella Latorre and primary sources like an interview with a contemporary artist of Chicana/o art.

Over November Break I took take a trip to East Los Angeles were I was able to walk around the city to explore various sites with murals and take photographs of the murals which incorporated both La Virgen de Guadalupe and The Eagle. I also went online and found images of these murals through sources like the “Los Angeles Mural Conservancy” to find photographs of the murals. I ultimately decided to create three different video slideshows, each with its own theme. I utilized ivideo and incorporated specific timing for each mural showcased and also incorporated music to the first two slideshows. The last video was silent in order to create the mood and to get the viewer to think about the exhibit through their own lens.

Although I was able to select a group of very vibrant and historically enriching murals, there are other murals found in the city that also posses striking images of the iconography that I was choosing. I also understand and must acknowledge that each of the cities that I am examining are very large and difficult to project in such a limited amount of time.  Instead I decided to focus simply on two murals from each city in order to give the viewers enough time to examine the image and to process the interactions that are going on when confronted with the iconography.
