Statistical thinking: The value of statistics

Students articulate the uses and limitations of statistical analysis.

  • Statistics help us to make informed decisions about issues for which we do not have full information.
  • Scientists make hypotheses, design experiments or develop a method of observation, gather relevant data, and draw conclusions about the world based on the statistical analysis of the data.
  • Statistics do not prove anything with certainty, but they provide a systematic way to express levels of confidence.

Students are responsible consumers of statistics who ask informed questions about data and statistical analyses presented to them in daily life.
