Introduction

"I always turn to the sports section first.  The sports page records people's accomplishments; the front page has nothing but man's failures." ~Earl Warren, Chief Justice of the United States

Pueblo Sports

Athletics has long been a means for the people in a community to identify with one another.  An article in Psychology Today notes that, "Sports draw us in for many reasons, the elegance, the competition, the history, our identification with great athleticism, a coming together of a shared story..."  It allows us to forget about life and live in the moment as we cheer our teams on.  All of these permeate the atmosphere of athletics in Pueblo, Colorado.
In its long history, sports and its history lie at the heart of the city of Pueblo.  This webpage examines only a small fragment of the rich history of sports in the "Steel City, including the intense high school rivalry tradition, a glimpse at the professional athletes, like Babe Ruth or Dutch Clark, who have made their way through the town, as well as women's involvement in sports. It also highlights those athletes who have had such an indelible impact on the athletic landscape of Pueblo that they have been memorialized in various Sports Hall's of Fame in Pueblo.
Pueblo has also been a city of diversity, from settlers' early dealings with American Indians, to the influx of  immigrants during the early 20th century. Sports has always been a way for people from different backgrounds to connect to one another, an element that has permeated the culture of the city through the modern day. In Pueblo you can catch "the oldest high school football rivalry west of the Mississippi," in the Bell Game, or see photos of early baseball teams decorating restaurant walls.
Sports both in high school, college, or other local organizations remains both a connection to the past and a source of pride for the city. Recently, the East High School Eagles won back-to-back football championships in 2014-2015. Colorado State University-Pueblo now boasts twenty men's and women's teams, as well as its own share of championships with the football team winning the Division II National Championship in 2014.
