Workshop “Preservación y preparación ante desastres” by Miriam Centeno Sponsored by NEH Chairman’s Emergency Grant, participant institutions where provide with PPE bag (donated by ALA), an Emergency Response Wheel & Gaylords Collection Care Guide (donated by Gaylord). The workshops covered collection care and disaster preparedness. Training took place at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez on January 12; at the University of Puerto Rico, Ponce on the 16 and at University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras on the 18. A total of 76 participants benefited from the training.

18. Cielo Martín Zayas, volunteer on the road When ArchiRED made a call for volunteers to compile data of damages, Cielo didn’t hesitate. From October 30 to December 5 she was on the road visiting 13 towns on the Northwest of the Island (Arecibo, Barceloneta, Camuy, Dorado, Florida, Hatillo, Lares, Manatí, Quebradilla, Toa Alta, Toa Baja, Utuado y Vega Baja) and compiling data for 41 institutions. She also helped follow up with 8 historical archives.

Heritage Emergency and Response Training (HEART) Event - The Heritage Emergency National Task Force (HENTF) and the Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative, in collaboration with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), provided the Heritage Emergency and Response Training to museum professionals in the Island. The training took place at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico and topics ranged from collection salvage techniques, evacuation and long term planning for emergency management in a weeklong intensive course.

American Library Association donates 100 kits of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Due to the high concentration of mold spores in cultural institutions experts advise to proceed the cleaning process only with proper protection. During the months of September to December, these were hard to get locally. Through ALA, Michael Dowling in collaboration with, Miriam Centeno from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, were able to allocate 100 kits which included: nitrile gloves, hair caps, aprons and N95 mask.

Rescate de recursos de información: Manejo de agua y hongos A group of graduate students (future librarians and archivist) from the Escuela Graduada de Ciencias y Tecnologías de la Información (EGCTI) from the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras had the opportunity to practice rescuing affected collections after a catastrophic event. The workshop was offered by Soraya Serra, registrar at the Museo de Arte de Ponce, at the Fundación Luis Muñoz Marín.
