Cindy Sherman

"Dressed as a Hollywood film starlet, a suburban housewife, or a pubescent bobby-soxer, Sherman creates a series of dramatic personae, each with its own aura, its own particular presence. By simultaneously utilizing and undermining commercial conventions, she gives us glimpses of vulnerability, suffering, anticipation, desire." (Grundberg 1999)

Cindy Sherman is one of the most influential photographers in contemporary art and one of the most widely recognized. Her work is a reflection on society, working as her own model Sherman dresses up in costumes and disguises and transforms her appearance to create provocative photographs that explore wide-ranging issues of identity and reflection.  The outcome is her version of artistic portraiture.  She creates images that parody stereotypes of women, her images draw out emotions that may not be achieved by witnessing them in person. Sherman states, “These are pictures of emotions personified, entirely of themselves, with their own presence. I’m trying to make people recognize something of themselves, rather than me. (Grundberg 1999)

Untitled #90 shows Sherman dressed as a somewhat young younger girl laying waiting for the phone to ring. The expression on her face, the lighting and the overall mood of the picture create a certain type of artistic emotion.

In her image Untitled #92 Sherman again has captured an image of young girl maybe afraid or confused. The type of lighting and position of the camera is key to Sherman's effectiveness in her portraits.  Her images are incorporating emotion that is hard to achieve in everyday life, but her images are of everyday life.

Using wigs, costumes, makeup and props Sherman creates intriguing characters inspired by movies, TV, fashion and art history. In a sense she is combining acting and photography to create art. In my opinion her photographs are perfect examples of artistic representation.
