Moodle

Moodle

Introduction
Moodle is an open source, browser based course management system. Although it can be, and often is adapted institutionally (e.g., NCSU), it can also be installed by individuals. Web hosting is required for installation. The software scales well and can host one course, or an entire university worth of courses. It has been used successfully from elementary through college level implementations. It is free and has no limits to the number of users. Because the software is open source, it's frequently being updated and improved as well. It even accommodates a pay-per-course feature, so could be adapted to host a MOOC.

Functionality
The best thing about the software is that it allows for plug-ins to extend its functionality. Often these plugins that are developed become part of the next iteration of the software. The wide-range of functionality is one of the strongest selling points of this software, though the greatest amount of functionality is only available if you have administrator level access. There are a wide variety of standard assignments available, ranging from standard quizzes, grade books, and attendance modules to more advanced assignments like automatically generated peer review assignments and collaborative wikis. Getting more creative with this tool will some interesting results like badging and gamification.

Limitations
The biggest limit is the need for hosting the software. If one's school has not already installed it, the setup might be overwhelming for non-technical users. However, this option allows the most flexibility. Conversely, if an institution has already installed it and the individual instructor does not have administrator privileges, some of the functionality may not be accessible.

Pedagogical Value
This tool can offer full online course functionality or serve as the online hub for a blended course. At NCSU, for example, every course has a Moodle space generated and available each semester. It is an extremely flexible and free tool to facilitate course management.
