Phillip Jackson was born in 1928 in New Jersey and was adopted by chicken farmers. He was interested as being a performer as a young child, but this all changed when he married his high school sweetheart Josephine D’Andrea in 1984. Jackson then joined the Navy but only shortly, then left to pursue higher education. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Rowan University, his masters as at Temple University, and his doctorate in developmental psychology from Teachers College at Columbia University. During this time, Jackson taught at Wayne State University before transferring to University of Chicago. There he became the David Lee Shillinglaw Distinguished Service Professor of Education and Psychology. Jackson became interested in John Dewey’s works and ideas and developed the concept of “Hidden Curriculum”.
