not but nothing other: African-American Portrayals, 1930s to Today

This painting is one of a series inspired by J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan.

Marshall has said that in this series he, “...appl[ies] that concept of being lost in a Never, Never Land to a lot of young black men.” Each painting depicts adolescents convicted and jailed, lives cut short by incarceration. Here is a video from the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study's symposium on Vision & Justice. Watch Danielle Allen, Elizabeth Hinton, and Bryan Stevenson discuss the criminal justice system and the impacts of mass incarceration.
