Facts About Acne

Acne is the most common skin condition that can occur at any age. According to Dr. Neil Niren, a skin specialist running his own dermatology practice in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, approximately 85% of all people have acne at some point in their lives. This common condition can range from mild to severe, and can sometimes cause serious scarring. Some recent researches performed by Dr. Niren, show that to date, nearly 50 million Americans suffer from some form of acne. That's why it is important that professionals have several treatment options available for each age group.

Acne can be triggered by many different factors, including hormone fluctuations, illnesses, irritants and certain medications. Acne results in an excessive production of sebum, a buildup of dead skin cells and an accumulation of bacteria.

This skin condition can be caused by many different factors. At least few of those factors have to exist, in order for the lesions to occur. In addition, Neil Niren MD has listed some of the most important factors.

Although most people are tempted to squeeze acne blemishes, this is actually a huge mistake. Touching the acne is probably one of the worst things to do, as it can cause serious consequences such as worsening of inflammation, spread of infection and a longer healing process. Inflammation is an important factor in the development of acne. It can lead to redness, swelling and irritation, and eventually damage the follicle walls.

Not removing your makeup before going to sleep is another mistake. By leaving your makeup overnight you obstruct the skin to renew, and clogs your pores. When your pores are clogged it is easy for bacteria to build up and cause inflammation. That's why Dr. Neil Niren recommends always keeping a stash of makeup remover wipes in your bedside stand.

To treat acne, cleansing your skin excessively may not be helpful. Many people think that more is better when it comes to skin cleansing, but that is not always the case. As dermatologist Dr. Neil Niren adds, cleansing the skin excessively is a mistake because it further aggravates the skin, without addressing the main problem. Overproduction of sebum by the sebaceous glands which are located at the root of hair follicles is the main cause of acne, and cleansing has no benefits in that regard.
