John Milton

In Milton’s Paradise Lost, Satan travels from Hell through Chaos to arrive at the newly created world. Chaos serves as a kind of storage area for the matter that God uses to create things and life. As such, it suggests a model of atomism, in which nothing is ever created or destroyed. Indeed, it is the fallen angel’s desire to force God to annihilate them that further portrays this inability for matter to be destroyed.
