China’s Chengdu-Kunming Railroad

In order to move the minerals and other raw materials to factories, and to move military-industrial products to their destinations, railway projects were constructed throughout the Third Line defense areas.  Hundreds of thousands of workers were mobilized to complete these railways, through the railway corps or “Tiedao Bing.”  The Chengdu-Kunming railroad is the most famous of these lines because of its exceptional engineering adaptation to rugged terrain, and the challenges facing the workers who built it.
