Living Otherwise: Buddhist Photography on the New Silk Road

Images of a Community of Wanderers

The images collapse public spaces of ad-hoc paths and hillsides into the private spaces of homes that have been assembled out of earth and found objects. They help us think about this community of wanderers as a complex whole made up of water delivery and waste disposal systems cobbled together out of discarded barrels, waste disposal in hand-dug pits, recycling picked over by hand and garbage fed to sheep. Nothing is wasted, most things are shared. This is a community made up of chattering kids herding goats; men carrying pieces of this or that; parents staying warm by a fire stoked with scrap wood just so while listening to tinny music on Uyghur call-in radio show. They help us think about the feelings of the place; the way being attached to each other helps people survive.
