Robin Bernstein, class of 1991

"For me, being a lesbian at Bryn Mawr in the late 1980s felt, sometimes, like being a kid in a candy store. I was surrounded by amazing, brilliant, fascinating dykes.

By the end of my senior year, though, Bryn Mawr's lesbian community made me feel claustrophobic. One time, I went to a party where there were probably 60 or 70 dykes. I slowly looked around the room and realized that every woman there was either my ex-lover, or my ex-roommate, or my ex-lover's ex-roommate, or my ex-roommate's ex-lover, and so forth. I was separated by no more than one degree from everyone at the party.

At that moment, Bryn Mawr felt small, and I needed to get out."
