Physical Space

As a marginalized and oft-threatened group, LGBT people have historically asked for and created designated, physically safe spaces.

At Bryn Mawr College between 1970 and 2000, a few spaces served as safe spaces, notably the BGALA Center. Other spaces were transitory, spaces of argument between homophobic and queer parties, such as the Campus Center bathrooms in Fall 1988. Finally, I have included a discussion about the classroom as an LGBT space, where I puzzle through the issue of making courses safe for LGBT participants.
